What is a soul?

The simplest way to understand the precious nature of the soul is to use the analogy of that which we consider perhaps the most precious of all nature. The diamond. It may seem ironic that the greatest treasure of the material world can also represent the beautiful complexity of the human soul when materialism is so often responsible for such negativity.

To understand the relationship between the human being and the human soul one need only look to the diamond. The magnificent splendor of a diamond is beautifully representative of the soul and the curious nature of a single facet, that of a human being. Given this example one can clearly see that it is not the human that possesses the soul but quite the opposite. To be a little closer to the truth, just as the diamond has many facets, so too does the soul have many beings.

Living the illusion that we call life, we feel and act very independent from that of our neighbor. We look out from ourselves with very little idea as to what the self is. Over identification with a single facet of the diamond has caused us to forget that which is true.

Another rather ironic analogy which we can use to understand life's relationship to the soul is that which we have often labeled the giver of life, water. If you imagine a glorious fountain endlessly regenerating cascades of water then the image you bring to mind is that of the experience of the soul. Each individual droplet of water that falls through the air carries the independence and identity of an a single being. Separate in itself, the droplet is born of the fountain to live a relatively short life which comes to an end as the droplet splashes back into the fountain pool. But, as with the life that we live, the droplet does not die when it reaches the journeys end for the journey has no end. The endless circle of the fountain is the very nature of the endless circle which is life. What does happen when the droplet reaches the pool is that it sees itself for what it real is. Part of the whole. Of course the fountain has many droplets, all at different stages of their life.

When you realize the true multi dimensional nature of the soul a lot of things begin to slide into place. The image that you see each day in the mirror is a single facet of that diamond, it is a single droplet from that fountain. When we look around us we see other facets and other droplets, some of these belonging to other diamonds and other fountains, some, naturally, belonging to the same. Droplets which were born of the same fountain have a relationship which is unmistakable. Its is here that one begins to understand the true nature of what we call twin souls or soulmates and, of course, unfold the mystery of reincarnation.
