Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation is the key which allows us to unlock the door to the limitless potential which lies within the realms of the subconscious mind. To relax is sometimes not as simple as one would expect. To aid your relaxation practice these techniques as regularly as possible. You will soon reap the benefits.

tense to relax

One of the most powerful, and easy to perform, relaxation techniques available is to tense each and every muscle in your body individually, then allow each muscle to fully relax before going on to the next. To start this technique take three deep breathes. Now, on your next in breath, hold it for a moment and tense all the muscles in both of your feet. Pause for as long as you comfortably can then, with a big sigh allow your feet to completely relax. It may help to imagine that they are sinking a little as they do. Next take a deep in breath and tense all the muscles in both of your lower legs. Once again hold it for as long as is comfortable then, with a big sigh exhale and completely relax your lower legs allowing them to sink down as you do.

Repeat this process with your upper legs, then stomach region, then torso, then upper arms and shoulders followed by the lower arms and hands (clench your fists as you tense your hands) and finally your face neck and head.

When you tense be sure not to over tense the muscle which could cause you health problems. Also try to isolate the muscle group which you are concentrating on to the absolute exclusion of all the other muscles in your body, for example when you are tensing your upper arms and shoulders all the other muscles in your body should be completely relaxed.

the relaxing breath

Similar to the first method, but much quicker to perform. Here, as you take an in breath, tense every muscle in your entire body (don't over do it, you don't want to strain anything!) hold the breath and the tension for the count of 4 then very slowly exhale to the count of 8. As you exhale imagine that you body is sinking to a deeper level. Also slowly relax all the muscles, do this at the same pace as you exhale, so it takes until the 8th number before you have relaxed all your muscles. Now, take another deep breath, once again hold it for the count of 4 while you tense your entire body. Again slowly exhale to the count of 8, however this time as you relax your body and imagine that you are sinking also become aware of the sensation of your limbs becoming limp, loose and floppy. On the third in breath hold it for the count to 5, as you do tense every muscle in your body. Then with an even bigger sigh than before, exhale to the count of 10, be sure to push all the air from your lungs, as you do this relax your entire body. Feel your limbs go floppy and as you get to the 6th number imagine that you entire body is melting. By the number 10 imagine that you are completely liquid. From this moment breathe normally.
