Dealing with phobias

Phobias are wonderful things as they perfectly illustrate your capacity to learn. Most phobias are created in an instant, yet last a lifetime. We never forget to have an emotional response when exposed to the subject of our phobia and it takes no conscious effort to retain such a powerful connection. This is learning at its very best, and illustrates how immensely powerful your subconscious mind is.

When we develop a phobia we are creating an association between a stimulus, the object of the phobia, and a response, usually fear. Using NLP techniques, it is possible to break that association very easily, thus eliminating the phobia. It is not necessary to know how, why or when the association was made in the first place and the process used to break the association is fast and easy. In fact, this process is so simple you can do it yourself, right now.

The NLP fast phobia cure

To eliminate your phobic response simple follow the steps below, you might find it easier to have someone talk you through these steps, or, if you prefer you could always practise on a dislike or fear that is not quite as powerful as a phobia before you go for it on the real thing. This will ensure that you will know what you are doing when you do it for real.

  1. Firstly you must identify what it is that triggers your phobic response. If you suffer from arachnophobia this would probably be seeing a spider in the bath!
  2. Recall an actual time this has happened and remember that you were safe before and after the incident.
  3. Imagine that you sitting in a cinema watching that event take place on the screen, make the screen very small and black and white. Now pause the screen so that it is showing an image of you, being and feeling safe, before the event occurred.
  4. Now, move back from your position in the cinema seat and imagine that you are in the projection booth, watching the you that is in the cinema, which is watching the screen, so that you are doubly disassociated from the experience.
  5. You should now be able to see yourself in the projection booth, watching another you in the seat, watching a third you on the screen.
  6. Now un-pause the film of yourself on the screen, keep it black and white and very small and run it through to the end of the experience. When you reach the point that you are feeling safe pause the film and imagine the whole screen in turning white.
  7. Now float out of the projection booth, out of the seat and right into the end of the film.
  8. This is the important part! With the film in full colour and life size, run it right back to the beginning very quickly, this time you are actually in the film so imagine all of your actions going in reverse until you reach the point before the event where you feel completely safe. This whole process should take no more than a second or two. It helps if you make the sound, 'Whooooosh!!!!' as you do it!
  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 until you feel completely comfortable with the situation, try 'whoooshing' back even faster, or confidently announcing 'YES!' when you reach the start!
  10. To ensure that you really have removed your previous phobic association, imagine yourself in the future in a situation that would have previously created a phobic response and test your reaction. If you are still a little bit frightened do it again! If your fear is a rational one, such as being scared of venomous snakes, a little bit of fear is probably a good thing!

By following the above steps you should be able to comfortably eliminate any phobia very quickly. However, if you feel the need, I have included a list of links below that you may find useful.
