Something that is often overlooked in astral projection is the metal preparation. This section can save you a great deal of time. One of the problems I experienced when I was learning to project was that whenever I made some progress the shock that I had done something pulled me straight back to my body. The mental preparation stage will help you to cope with the changes that you will experience so that they do not hinder you progress.
Preparation and practice are the keys to success. Do not expect results over night. Prepare yourself well and practice each technique regularly and you will reap the benefits sooner than you think.
During the mental preparation there are two areas which you need to focus on, each as important as the other. Firstly, the actual process of leaving your body and secondly, the projection itself. Many people concentrate on the separation process and don't bother to worry about the actual projection experience until they are experiencing it. This causes an overload of confusion and the projection ends. I'm sure you can imagine how frustrating this can become. Of course to ignore the separation preparation and focus on the projection experience would be pointless, if you do not separate from your body then you will never experience the projection! As you can see, both preparations are essential, take some time to practice the following preparation methods thoroughly, work towards your goal systematically and you will be rewarded for your efforts.
There are many methods which you can use to leave your body and you will discover which works best for you as you experiment. Some of the methods use visualization skills, others rely on a more tactile approach, some require you to hear and create internal sound and others ask of you to simply think of nothing and let it happen. To help you improve the necessary skills in order to achieve the different techniques of projection I have selected some exercises which you should follow.
Find yourself a picture which is pleasing to look at, it can be of anything you desire. Gaze at the picture until it is all that you are visually aware of. Now , close your eyes and imagine the picture before you, try to see it in as much detail as possible, it may take a little time before you are able to see the picture in your minds eyes but stick with it for about five minutes. When you have a clear image of the picture in your minds eye pay close attention to colors and depth. When you are satisfied that you have fully recreated the picture in your minds eye open your eyes again and look back at the picture to see how close you reconstruction was.
This time close you eyes and mentally create a picture that you have not seen before, this could be whatever you choose. Take some time doing this, imagine the overall shape of your creation. Now, notice the colors and the textures, as your mental image gets stronger look for more detail within the image. Notice any movement. Take as long as you need to make this image as real as possible. Once you are satisfied with your creation imagine shrinking the image to a pinpoint of light. Look at the pin point of light to the exclusion of everything else. Once you are satisfied that you can accomplish this open your eyes and congratulate yourself for a job well done.
Lie down on your back and close your eyes. Now, imagine what you look like from across the room. Pay close attention to your body position and your facial expression. Imagine that you are looking down on yourself. Now shift your view point closer so that you imagine that you are a few inches away from your own face, look at your face, next imagine that your view point has shifted back to where it was before. Continue to change your view point to different areas around the room, each time visualizing your body lying beneath you. You may need to spend some time of this exercise, spend as much time as you need and play with a variety of angles. Throughout the whole exercise notice how you feel. When you are happy with your progress open your eyes and sit up, once again congratulate yourself on your successful completion of the exercise.
Lie on your back with your eyes open. Position a mirror so that you can see your reflection. Now, whilst still looking at your reflection sit upright as slowly as you can, watching your body rise as you do. Do this several times, paying close attention to the position of your body as your slowly rise. Now, lie back and close your eyes. Visualize yourself as you did before lying back on the bed, and with out moving, visualize yourself sitting up as you have just seen in the mirror. As you do this keep the visualization of you lying on the bed constant, but, at the same time see a second image of your self rise to a sitting position, it my help to visualize the second body as if it is constructed purely of light. Do this as many times as you feel comfortable, make the mental images as clear as you possible can. Notice how you feel during this exercise.
Sit comfortably in a chair with your eyes closed and slowly begin to rock backwards and forwards rhythmically. Do this for at least five minutes. It may help if you listen to a favorite song during this part of the exercise. Pay very close attention to the sensations that you experience during the rocking. Now, sit back and close your eyes, this time, without any physical movement, imagine that you are gently rocking back and forth. Ensure that you do not physically move during this part of the exercise. Continue to imagine that you are rocking until you feel a slight vibration within your body. Once you feel the vibration you can stop, open your eyes and smile to yourself, you are well on your way to projection!
For this exercise simply lie on your back in a comfortable position with your eyes closed and imagine that your body in completely weightless. Imagine that you are beginning to float upwards, as though your body is full on helium. Focus your attention on the thought of getting lighter and lighter, after a while you may feel a weightless sensation sweep over you, when you feel this sensation play with it, imagine that you are floating around the room, you do not have to visualize anything during this exercise as to visualize will consume too much energy at this point, simply imagine the feeling of floating. Enjoy this sensation for as long as you feel necessary, make it as real as possible. When you are ready imagine that you land back in the position which you started and open your eyes with a smile.
Hang a piece of string from the ceiling above you so that when you lie on your back the end of the string is about a foot above the center of your chest. Lie back and close your eyes, reach up and grasp hold of the string with both hands. Hold the string as though you are about to pull yourself up into a sitting position. By passing one hand over the other imitate the action of pulling yourself upright, but allow the string to slide though your hands. Do this for about two minutes. Now, rest your arms by your side and close your eyes. With no physical movement imagine that you are pulling yourself into an upright position, ensure that you stay relaxed during this exercise, do not move your hands or arms, just imagine that you are. Breathe deeply and with each in breathe imagine that one of your hands pulls down on the string. Do this for about 15 to 30 seconds. Imagine that you are pulling yourself into an upright position but ensure that you do not move. After a little while you may feel a vibration in your chest, once you feel the vibration imagine that you are once again lying down and open your eyes. You are now very close to a projection!
Close you eyes and listen to the sounds within your head, after a few moments you will notice a high pitched whining sound. Concentrate on that sound and make it louder and increase the pitch of the sound until you can not here it at all.
Think of the sound which is made when something vibrates, imagine the sound as clearly as you can. When you can actually hear the sound increase the volume and the pitch very gradually until it is out of your hearing range.
Close your eyes and think of nothing, every time a thought enters your mind imagine that you push it aside. Continue to do this until the space between invasive thoughts grows larger and larger.
Pretend that an interesting sound that you want to hear is about to happen. Stop what you are doing and listen for the sound. If a thought creeps in push it aside with a 'ssshhhhh, I'm trying to listen!' attitude. Repeat this exercise as often as possible, It will increase the amount of time that you are able to think about nothing!
To prepare yourself for the projection you need to know what to expect. The exercises above will help to to achieve a successful separation from your physical body but once in the astral body there are a number of points which you need to be aware of.
The first of these is the transitional period between the physical and the astral. The actual separation is a very exciting experience. You will be conscious when you body begins to separate and you will feel the separation, it will be a physical sensation of vibration. You will feel your bodies desperately fighting for freedom from one another. The bond between your physical and astral bodies is a very strong one, however, once you have raised the vibration of your astral body it will want to break free from the restraints of your physical body. This is a crucial moment in a successful separation as any interference by you at this stage could snap your bodies back together. When you feel the vibration rise and the separation begin do not force it, simply let it happen, to do this you need to adopt the attitude of , 'oh, that's nice' and just let it happen. Do not get involved, your bodies can separate much better without your interference...... at least until you have learnt how to aid the separation.
If all goes well you will find that you are floating out of your body! If you stay too close to your body then you will be drawn back in. Try to create some distance between you and your body by going into another room.
Once you are projected you will experience the world around you in a very different manner. Things that you see around you are not necessarily there, your imagination has the ability to create weird and wonderful situations for you to explore. Although a lot of fun can be had experimenting with the creations of your imagination you will soon realize that this becomes more of a hindrance. If you are in a situation where you do not approve of what you see then you are probably looking at a manifestation of your own imagination. It is usually enough to say that what you are looking at is not real and will it to change into something else for it to do so.
Another problem which you will have to deal with is the astral vision. There are about four different types of astral vision that I am aware of and, of course, there could be more! The problem with astral vision stems from the fact that once you are in a projected form you do not possess any organs, this includes eyes! So to see you simply sense what is around you, then this is transformed into something that you can make sense of...... although you often can make no sense of it! because we have no physical eyes in the astral plane we can see 360 degrees all at the same time. This can obviously cause confusion so try and focus your vision on what is in front of you.
When in a projected form you consist only of energy you have no physical form at all . It is therefore possible for you to pass through walls and other normally solid objects with ease. You may notice that you do have a body, if you have then this has been created by your subconscious mind so that you have something to relate to as yourself that you are familiar with. To illustrate this point you can play with taking on different forms and sure enough you will become such a form. To create a seemingly physical form for yourself whilst projecting takes a lot of visualization. Focusing energy on visualizing a body is a waste of energy which could be spent on a more productive process such as astral travel.
One thing you should always respect about the astral worlds which you visit is that they are real places. Things live in the astral plane just as we live on the physical plane. Respect there territory and ask them for guidance on your journeys. What you see in the astral plane may not be the same as what I see, each person creates there own interpretation of the energies within the astral planes.
Another point which is essential to remember about the astral worlds is that they are connected to the physical world, and each effects the other. Remember that once you are in the astral worlds you can do whatever you please, however, if you decide to send out evil it will return three fold. Respect and enjoy the astral planes, you can learn a great deal, and enjoy many a fantastic experience.
Astral projection takes very little physical preparation. When you astral project you leave everything which is physical behind. You wonder off and explore the astral worlds and your body lies in wait for your return...... Well it should lie in wait for your return, but, more often than desired, it pulls you back because it needs you for one thing or another. Basically, once you have left your body it can't do anything except breath (to keep you alive, you can't astrally breath, you have no lungs!), exist and pull you back if it needs attention. What we aim to achieve through physical preparation is to minimize the incidents of physical need so that you can get on with your projection. To do this I have developed a check list which is available here. I have kept it separate from this text so that you can print it off and use it for your own projections. The list also contains other important information which will aid your projection.
When you feel happy that your preparation is complete go to the methods section to begin.
